Title: Sept. 6, 1955: The anti-Greek riots in Constantinople and
the decline of the Greek minority.
Summary: Fifty years ago, on the evening of Sept. 6, 1955, widespread
riots against the Greek community erupted in Constantinople. In a matter of
six hours, most of the community's institutions and wealth were destroyed by
the mob. The Greek minority never recovered from the devastating blow of these
events. From 100,000 Greeks in Constantinople in 1955, there are about 2,000
today. Prof. Ioannidis will cover the historical and political factors that
led to this phenomenon.
Additional Comments by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Alexander Kile, a former
resident of Constantinople Admission $20 will include four course dinner.
Please call for reservations by Wednesday, Sept. 14, Panos Stavrianidis at
